Usually intensive therapy encompasses two full days, with a few hour intro session the evening before. Retreat or Marathon therapy sessions were designed for people who must travel to be seen by a Gottman clinician, and for professional clients who have difficulty scheduling weekly sessions into their lives. It is also very beneficial for people who want an accelerated and in depth therapy experience where they are not worried about the clock running out at the end of the hour. It is roughly the equivalent of 6 mo of therapy. Because there are so few Certified Gottman Therapists in some parts of the country, these intensive marathon therapy sessions are offered.
Prior to coming in, you both will separately complete an assessment and go through a screening process. This assessment will give me a lot of very helpful information about the current status of your relationship as well as family history, etc.
The sessions are 4-6pm the first day, then 9:30-4:30 the following 2 days with an hour lunch break. These times can possibly be adjusted ahead of time with consultation.
The following criteria would preclude a couple from doing a marathon session as they would need more intensive private therapy and/or individual therapy or intervention:
If there is active alcohol and/or drug addiction that is not being addressed by a recovery program.
If there is serious violence in your relationship, threats by one or both partners that serious violence might occur, or fear of serious violence.
If either partner currently has an untreated major mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar, or dissociative identity disorder.)
If there is an undisclosed, or current affair that either partner is unwilling to give up
If either partner is currently experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts, or has a history of serious suicide attempts or harm to others.
These intensive couples sessions are cash pay only and I do not bill insurance for them. These sessions are relationship therapy and not individual therapy with 2 people in the room. It does not label one of you as the problem, it is meant to change the system. Therefore it is not possible to bill insurance. The insurance companies look for medical necessity and a billable mental health disorder for one person.
The rate for this intensive therapy is 3,500 dollars. This is a highly competitive rate marathon therapy is typically in the $4000 range with some going up to 5000 this is roughly 6 months of therapy packed into a weekend so although it may sound like a high rate it’s very much worth it in the long run and the benefit you get from it it can be immense.
If you cancel more than 2 weeks before your intensive start date you get a refund minus $50 fee. If you cancel less than 2 weeks before start date your fee will be held and you can apply it to a future intensive date (within one year) Please ask if you have any questions.
